Stendhal was born in Grenoble, France.

When he was young, his grandpa, a open thought doctor, influenced him so much. He read large amount of famous books at his grandpa’s.

During 1799 to 1814, Stendhal join Napoléon Bonaparte’s army, the long-term struggle made him hate the decadent feudal nobility and the dark rule of the church.

So ,when he left the army, most of his works are criticizing the nobility and church.
